Denise Ribas Cavalcante, LMSW

Licensed Master Social Worker

I am a clinician at our Fairfax clinic who provides therapy services!

My ideal clients are individuals and couples who are motivated to better understand themselves and improve their relationships with others and with themselves, at work or personal lives. They may be navigating challenges such as anxiety, trauma, life transitions, identity questions, or relational difficulties. These clients are often thoughtful and introspective, seeking not just symptom relief but deeper insight and long-term change.
Their needs often include developing emotional awareness, learning to regulate difficult feelings, healing from past wounds, and improving communication in personal or relational contexts. Some may come to therapy feeling stuck or disconnected, wanting to live with more clarity, authenticity, and purpose.

What they want is to feel more empowered, connected, and aligned with their values. Whether working individually or as part of a couple, they are open to exploring their inner world and committed to doing the work of change. I feel most fulfilled supporting clients who are curious, engaged, and willing to approach therapy with honesty and openness.

I believe I help clients by offering a safe space where they can be who they are. I bring a grounded, supportive presence and build trust through honest, respectful communication. I create a space where people can express difficult emotions without fear of judgment, and I help them make sense of those emotions, so they feel less overwhelmed.

I support clients in understanding how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected. Together, we explore their inner world so they can recognize patterns, process past experiences, and make choices that reflect who they are and what they need. My goal is to help them feel more empowered, more in control of their lives, and more connected to themselves and their significant others.

I like to give homework; articles, books, or lectures that can support their growth between sessions. I also use tools like role play, visual aids, real-life examples, and simple strategies to help clients apply insight to real situations. I’m especially effective when I can bring both emotional depth and cognitive understanding into the session. That combination helps clients feel not only heard but also equipped to make meaningful changes in their daily lives.

I’ve made big life changes, including a later-in-life career shift. I’ve lived in different countries, speak several languages, and stay curious about people and the world. I love nature, animals, and Shakespeare. I bring openness, honesty, and lived experience to therapy. Change is possible at any age—you don’t have to do it alone.
