Hawani Tessema, M.A., NCC

Resident in Counseling

I am a clinician at our Arlington clinic who provides therapy services!

My ideal client is between the ages of 15 and 50 and comes from all walks of life—but they share a common thread: a desire for change, healing, and deeper understanding of themselves. Many are navigating challenges such as low self-confidence, past trauma or PTSD, abusive relationships, self-worth struggles, shame, suicidal ideation, or self-harm. Others may be wrestling with anxiety, faith-related concerns, life transitions, or the complexities of parenting and connecting with their children.

Some are motivated and high-functioning individuals who simply need a safe space, accountability, and support to stay aligned with their goals and explore and address internal barriers. What unites them all is the deep longing to feel more in control when life feels overwhelming—to respond to emotionally distressing situations without becoming consumed by helplessness, hopelessness, or emotional dysregulation.

These individuals are doing their best to cope with pain that has often gone unseen or unheard. My role is to walk alongside them with compassion, guiding them toward clarity, resilience, and self-empowerment. Together, we create space for healing and growth—because lasting transformation begins when we feel safe enough to show up as we are.

Drawing from a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches—including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Mindfulness practices, Psychodynamic Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing—I tailor my therapy approach to meet clients unique needs and goals. Therapy isn’t one-size-fits-all, and I bring flexibility and thoughtfulness to help guide clients personal growth and healing.

Together, I will work toward helping clients build greater self-awareness, strengthen emotional resilience, and develop practical tools to navigate life’s difficulties. I support my patients in building confidence, confronting fears with compassion, challenging unhelpful thought patterns, and cultivating skills that promote balance and well-being, even amid life’s rough seasons.

My goal is not only to help clients feel better and meet their treatment objectives, but to help them live more fully and authentically.

I’ve witnessed how intentional connection and inner healing can profoundly transform lives. It’s my heartfelt desire for others to experience that same healing in a space where they feel truly seen, heard, and supported. I hold empathy, kindness, integrity, respect, safety, curiosity, and growth as guiding values in my work—and they form the foundation of the care I provide. I understand how vulnerable it can feel to invite someone into your inner world. That’s why I’m committed to creating a safe and collaborative therapeutic relationship, one where trust can grow and healing can take root.

I provide a warm, nonjudgmental space where individuals can begin to explore the thoughts, feelings, and experiences they may have struggled to voice elsewhere. Whether you’re facing anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, life transitions, or simply feeling stuck, I meet you where you are—with compassion and curiosity.
