Understanding Major Depression Disorder

Columbia Associates is dedicated to supporting your mental health. If you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, we encourage you to reach out for immediate support through your local crisis services by dialing 988, contacting your local emergency services, or visiting your local emergency room.

Major depression disorder (MDD), also known as major depression, is one of the most common mental health conditions in the United States. Affecting millions of people, MDD is much more severe than occasional sadness or short-term mood swings. This condition can impact every aspect of a person’s life—relationships, work, and even physical health.

For individuals experiencing severe depression, seeking treatment that will make an impact is essential to regaining stability in your life. One promising option for treatment-resistant depression is transcranial magnetic stimulation or NeuroStar® TMS therapy. Another FDA-approved option is Spravato® (esketamine), a prescription nasal spray designed for adults who have not found success with traditional treatments.

What Is Major Depression Disorder?

MDD is different from general sadness because it isn’t just a temporary emotional response to the typical hardships in life. In contrast, MDD can impair one’s ability to function. It’s a mental health condition with symptoms that include:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness
  • Hopelessness
  • Lack of interest or pleasure in nearly all activities

Major depression persists for weeks or longer in some cases. There are also physical symptoms, including:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Unexplained aches and pains

Causes of Major Depression Disorder

MDD often stems from a complex interplay of factors. They can be biological, psychological, and social. Genetics can increase the possibility of someone dealing with MDD, but life stressors, trauma, and certain medical conditions can also lead to an increased risk. While anyone can develop MDD, individuals with a family history or specific personality traits may be at a higher level of risk.

Treatment Options for Major Depression Disorder

Managing MDD requires a tailored approach, often combining therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes.

Traditional Treatments

Treatments for MDD most often include a combination of medications and psychotherapy. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) are common approaches that help individuals manage their thought patterns and build effective coping strategies. Medication, such as SSRIs or SNRIs, is frequently prescribed to help individuals deal more effectively with symptoms.

NeuroStar® TMS Therapy

Sometimes, MDD can be resistant to treatment. In cases like these, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can be a highly effective alternative. NeuroStar® TMS is a non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells associated with mood. It is particularly effective for people who haven’t been able to find relief through medications alone.

Columbia Associates offers NeuroStar® TMS for treating major depression and alleviating symptoms without some of the side effects that can be associated with medication. NeuroStar® TMS isn’t suitable for all clients. Our team will work with you to determine whether it’s the right choice for your needs.

Spravato® for Severe Depression

Another option for individuals dealing with severe or treatment-resistant depression is Spravato®, an esketamine nasal spray. Approved by the FDA, Spravato® is designed for people who have not responded well to at least two other forms of treatment for depression. When combined with oral antidepressants, it can rapidly reduce symptoms, including suicidal ideation, for some patients.

At Columbia Associates, our experienced team provides guidance on whether Spravato® is a suitable option for you. This treatment is administered under professional supervision, ensuring that you receive the care and monitoring needed throughout the process.

Recognizing Severe Depression

Many of the symptoms of severe depression mirror those of MDD; however, severe depression can also include suicidal ideation and the inability to complete daily tasks. Severe depression requires thorough and comprehensive treatment, as the symptoms can be especially disabling. For people experiencing these symptoms, reaching out to a mental health professional is the best thing you can do for yourself.
